Taiwan's AboUnion Technology, a memory IC design house specializing in NAND flash applications, is eyeing the market for solid-state drive (SSD) controllers, according to the company. The company has unveiled its 32-bit CPU SSD controller based on ARM platform designs.

AboUnion on March 19 announced its entry in the SSD controller market, joining Phison Electronics and Silicon Motion.

AboUnion is currently cooperating with Global Unichip, an IC design service provider whose foundry partner is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), said the company. Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL) plays as AboUnion's packaging and testing service provider.

Founded in March 2002, AboUnion's flash memory card portolio has extended to include SD, miniSD, microSD and MMC cards.

In related news, controller IC designers Phison and Silicon Motion have kicked off mass production of SATA-interface SSD controllers, whereas Alcor Micro and Skymedi are seeking to develop new product lines to minimize losses from both portable drive and flash card price wars, according to market sources.
